There are countless ways to go about setting your goals and you need to make sure you set your goals the best way that will work for you. After all we are talking about your amazing future here…Accomplishing challenging goals is no easy feat and if your goals do not make you want to jump out of bed every morning at 4 am, well then I guess you need to take a harder look at what you actually want from your life.
5 Tips for Powerful Goal Setting
- Make it Measurable
Now that you have your specific outcomes that you want in your life, I want you to assess and make sure the goal is measurable. This will help you to measure your progress to make sure that you are reaching your goal. It is useless trying to achieve any goal that you cannot measure. A goal that states “I want to be more relaxed” is going to be exceedingly difficult to measure. But “I want to stop overreacting at my kids on the ride to school” is definitely measurable. So, make sure that the list of goals you wrote down is measurable. If there is anything that needs to be fixed, I encourage you to do that before you move on.
- Can You Take Action?
The goals you set need to be actionable. A goal that is dependent on someone else doing something first or something else happening first is not an actionable goal. A goal needs to be completely in your control. It needs to be something you can work on each day without having to rely on outside forces.
- Is it Reasonable?
I do not want to put a chokehold on your creativity and free mind here. Though if you are in your mid-sixties and mildly overweight having a goal to be the next Rafael Nadal is not realistic no matter how good of a tennis player you are. Make all your goals realistic. Not too easy to achieve and something that you can do.
- When Will You Do It By?
A goal without a time frame is pointless. “I will earn $250,000” and “I will lose 20 pounds” will never be reached. The time frame is there for you to ensure that the goal is challenging enough for you. Without a time frame, you can be working on your goal for an entire life time and never finish it. This seems oddly familiar…..could be why you never finished any of your other goals?!
- Motivation
Setting your goals, writing a plan and making sure you can achieve them is good and well. Though in order to really make sure you complete your goals, you will need some extra motivation. That “spice” that will make you want to jump out of bed each morning and be inspired to achieve them.
The best way I have found to do this is? By adding emotion to every single goal. What is the real reason that you want to earn more money or why do you want to be in better shape? I want you to think about how this will make you feel and really start to feel it. Use these feelings to inspire you every day.
